How the Norwegian V2 rule works

In a Norwegian main clause, the finite verb occupies the second sentence position. The first position can contain one word or a whole phrase.

Count constituents, not words
A phrase such as I dag or Etter jobb fills one position even though it contains several words.
Etter jobb lager jeg middag.
After work I make dinner.

Move the subject behind the verb
When something other than the subject comes first, place the finite verb next and the subject after it.
I morgen møter vi kunden.
Tomorrow we meet the client.

Place ikke after the subject
In an inverted main clause, the usual pattern is opening phrase–verb–subject–ikke.
På fredag jobber hun ikke.
On Friday she does not work.

Common mistake: The verb is the second constituent, not necessarily the second written word. “I morgen” fills the entire first slot.
