How Norwegian verb forms work

Norwegian verbs do not change with the subject. Jeg jobber and de jobber use the same present form. What changes is the tense.

Regular verbs

å jobbe → jobber → jobbet → har jobbet

Groups 1 and 2 use recurring endings. Learn the pattern, but still notice whether the past form uses -et, -te, -de, or -dde.

Strong verbs

å skrive → skriver → skrev → har skrevet

Group 3 verbs usually change their stem vowel in the past. Their principal forms are best learned together.

Irregular verbs

å være → er → var → har vært

Group 4 contains common verbs whose forms do not follow one dependable pattern. Frequent recall makes them automatic.

Past participle: the cards list the participle alone. In the present perfect, place har before it: har skrevet.
